    That’s a fantastic question, Nick.

You have no idea how many times I’ve asked myself that.

Well they are using the URL to tell you where you are on the page and where you came from. The ref=home means that you clicked on the “home” link, and the #/home.php? means that you clicked on a part of the home page. If you click on the filters it will change things. It’s all about tracking how you navigate the site as well as giving the potential of showing you different things based on how you actually navigated to the page.

Well yes, I know what the tags are for but there are two major problems:
      1. There is no reason that information needs to be in the URL – it could be passed in other ways which would not result in such ugly URLs.
      2. There must be a bug somewhere because the URLs start to build up as you navigate the site, and I’ve noticed this causes the site to react sluggishly. For example I’ve seen URLs like: “http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=29348482&ref=home#home.php?ref=home” etc.
